About Statistics

At BGStats we think of statistics as the science and art of gaining information from data. Statistics is a collection of mathematical methods that can be used to handle uncertainty in data, with the aim to explore, describe and model the underlying data-generating processes. Statistics holds a central role in applied science because it can help to solve many real life problems where data are available or can be collected. Applications of statistics are broad indeed and include business, marketing, economics, medicine, biology, agriculture, education, psychology, sociology, etc.

The role of biostatistics in medical research

The terms biostatistics or biometrics are used to refer to the application of statistics in biology or medicine. In evidence-based medicine the application of statistical methods is essential for evaluating and quantifying information gained from data collected in medical research projects. If you want to estimate the efficacy of a drug in an experimental clinical trial, or if you want to identify risk factors for a particular disease performing an epidemiological study, appropriate statistical methods are required to identify the deterministic components of the observed biological phenomenon.
